SUMMARY:Guided Exhibition Tour and Lunch "A History of China in Silk" by Chris Hall
DESCRIPTION:We are privileged to tour The Chris Hall Collection led by the collector himself\, Cambridge alumnus Chris Hall\, offering members a profound look at Chinese silk culture and its far-reaching impact.  The collection is internationally recognised as one of the largest\, finest and most comprehensive collections of antique Chinese costumes and textiles. \nFeaturing about 250 masterworks chosen from nearly 3\,000 pieces\, the exhibition traces Chinese textile art from the ancient era through to the 20th century.  Grounded in the evolution of dyeing\, weaving and design\, it reflects social\, cultural and technological changes throughout the period.  Members can witness the rich narratives of cross-cultural exchanges fostered through silk trade and fashion innovations. \nThe collection features a wide range of Chinese textiles\, with a special focus on Ming and Qing dynasty rank badges and rare religious fabrics\, renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship and historical significance.  This includes a personal selection of items from the Warring States period (475 – 221BC)\, to the Qing dynasty (AD 1636 – 1911) to contemporary work. \nAbout Chris Hall: \nChris Hall is a prominent Hong Kong accountant and tax adviser who has spent most of his career in Hong Kong.  He was born in Sudan\, and resided in Malta\, before coming to Hong Kong with his parents.  He is a graduate of Pembroke College\, Cambridge. \nHe is textile expert and collector and the Past President of the Textile Society and of Oriental Ceramic Society.  He is particularly well-known for his private collection of Chinese textiles. DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite selected Oxbridge members and their guest to a fireside chat and dinner with Dr the Hon CHOI Yuk-lin\, JP\, the Secretary for Education of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The fireside chat will be moderated by the Past President of the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Hong Kong\, Dr. Blanc Wan BEM. \nThe event is hosted by a member of the club\, Mr. Arun Nigum. \nThe Secretary of Education will address the society and there will be an interactive Q&A session. Chatham House rules will be applied.\nDr Choi joined the political team of the Education Bureau as Under Secretary for Education in 2017 and assumed the office of Secretary for Education in 2022. \nDr Choi has worked in the education sector for nearly 40 years. She began her teaching career in secondary schools in 1988\, serving for more than a decade before joining the Education Bureau’s Curriculum Development Institute\, after which she became a secondary school principal. Throughout the years\, she actively engaged in community and educational services dedicated to enhancing teacher professionalism and promoting a culture of respect for teachers. Her notable initiatives included organising the Outstanding Teacher Awards and establishing the Hong Kong Teachers Dream Fund.
