The fireside chat will be moderated by the President of the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Hong Kong\, Dr. Blanc Wan\, and is hosted by a member of the HK Club\, Mr. Arun Nigum. The fireside chat will focus on her career in the Administrative Service and Legislative Council\, as well as the opportunities and risks she sees for Hong Kong. There will be an interactive Q&A at the end. Chatham House rules will be applied. \nMrs Ip is currently a Legislative Council Member\, Chairperson of the New People’s Party\, the Savantas Policy Institute and the Maritime Silk Road Society as well as Court Member of the University of Hong Kong. Mrs Ip joined the Administrative Service of the Hong Kong civil service in September 1975 and worked in a wide range of policy areas\, including home affairs\, security\, trade and industry. She rose through the ranks to Director of Bureau in May 2000. She served as Secretary for Security from August 1998 to July 2003. She has been a Legislative Council Member returned by geographical constituency through direct elections since 2008. In October 2012 and July 2017\, Mrs Ip was appointed Non-Official Member of the Executive Council. Members can write “Fai Chun “(揮春) or lucky red banners for the upcoming Lunar New Year of Snake or other calligraphy pieces under Master Poon’s guidance. It involves some inclines but no steep climbs. However\, it will take about 3 hours of walking and once started there are no easy exit options except to complete the walk. Since 2014\, Sir Rick has been the Rector of Exeter College\, Oxford. A graduate of Brown University\, Sir Rick was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship\, which led him to complete a second undergraduate degree at Merton College\, Oxford. He further pursued his academic journey as a research student at Nuffield College\, a Junior Research Fellow at Wolfson College\, and a lecturer at Balliol College. His doctoral research focused on Victorian social history. Sir Rick was for twenty-one years an academic at the University of Glasgow\, where he became dean of social sciences\, vice-principal and professor of social history. He also held the latter title at Greenwich and King’s and is now professor emeritus of social history at King’s.  \n\nKnown for his commitment to innovative teaching methods\, Sir Rick has been actively involved in promoting computer-based teaching in history and other disciplines. His research interests have centered on modern British elites\, particularly the middle-class leaders of industrial towns and cities.\nIn recognition of his contributions to the field\, Sir Rick has been elected as the President of the Economic History Society\, an organization dedicated to promoting research and teaching in economic and social history since 1926. He currently serves on the board of the Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust and is the head of the Museum of London Academic Panel. Previously\, he held board positions at the University of Oxford\, the Royal Academy of Music\, the Museum of London\, Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)\, the US/UK Fulbright Commission\, the Advisory Council of the Institute of Historical Research (IHR)\, and the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC). \n\nA dual citizen of the UK and the USA\, Sir Rick was knighted in 2010 for services to higher education.
